Social Media explained ...
By I am the Client!
While I don't agree that newspapers and magazines are dead; I do agree that people are getting information via social media and they are participating more and more on social media sites.
Brands and companies who are using social media to actually engage with their consumers, which means actually listening, finding out what they like and don't like, responding to them and not just selling or branding themselves (trust me, this loses followers quickly - when you update a selling or promotional or buy this constantly) are finding themselves in the front of the whole social media game.
People are learning that we are becoming more and more interactive. That we are involved in social media, that we love companies who give away things for free like Crust Pizza who gives away a free pizza on Friday or publishing houses which give away free books after posting several questions.
I get job listings on social media and start my news searches on social media and then move to news sites like Wot News which comes with a twitter search and news analysis.
I am not sure if this means people are more informed. It does mean though that people are building relationships with companies and brands which is going beyond money. I have heard that social media has helped with customer service, with job search, with promotion, with marketing and eventually with making money.
Whether it has killed advertising I am not sure; I think it compliments it.

So much social media advice ...
There is so much social media advice on the Internet and Twitter, I believe that social media roles are going to increase this year.
Since December I have been researching what works and doesn't with social marketing and networking and really have found that the more active and present you are on your chosen social networks, the more beneficial for business.
I have been assisting a charity and a business with their social marketing and trying to be more active in how both can get fans and followers. It has been an intriguing time.
I have also been following Mumbrella and other ad agency blogs and sites as well as social networking campaigns to develop my understanding of this world and career I love so much.
I am compiling a list of businesses, small ones which work. Some have strange names and unusual concepts, all offer a point of difference and most are very active on the social media side of things.
I will post the list soon.

Best and Worst
Have a look at the best and worst social media marketing examples of the year.
From TV marketing to Skittles (people are not sure if this was a fail or success) from creating cancer awareness to people misusing Dominos on YouTube and Facebook, companies now have a possibly better and more challenging way to market to people in every country.
But brands can fail and companies can fail. Airlines seem to have a greater chance of failing when it comes to flight cancellations, not letting babies on planes and not providing alternate flights or temporary accommodation. When people are upset or angry they tend to Tweet about it on mobile phones.
Companies are learning that even if they are not using social media it doesn't mean that people are not talking about them on social media. This becomes apparent when businesses or brands come onto social media sites promising giveaways or prizes or claiming to be very aware of customers and listening to customers and then failing to do so.
Ikea used Facebook to market a new store. The first person to click on the item won said item. This was an innovative and cheap way to market a brand. They got hundreds of followers and people won new products.
There are so many ways a business or brand can fail; people talk. And if they have a negative experience, customer service or purchasing experience, they will certainly tell everyone about it.
but businesses and companies are succeeding by listening to customer's and dealing with their complaints. And it seems to be working.
I follow publishing houses on Twitter, I answer questions and I have won several books this year. The publishing houses who give away prizes are gaining publishers.
People talk. Let them talk about your business and brand. And get involved with your customers, readers, shoppers, moms and teens. They're doing the talking and buying.

Our Big Kitchen
Now here's a business/ charity I believe in.
Kitchens have always been a place of gathering where people come together and cook, or learn to cook while contributing towards their community and building friendships.
A friend of mine introduced me to Our Big Kitchen a few months ago and I am now doing their social media marketing for them
Our Big Kitchen is Kosher and is going to be Halal as well. They cook for the community and want their kitchen to be used by caterers, for children's parties and for all kinds of other incentives like supporting needs in a crisis (packing and distributing food) and assisting with making and cooking food for the hungry and homeless.
Here is their Twitter account
and their Facebook page
and their blog
If you want to get involved, please contact them.
